October is National Manufacturing Month. Frederick County is home to a variety of manufacturing companies in industries that include technology, equipment, agriculture, and so many more. Throughout the month of October, we will be highlighting some of Frederick County’s manufacturers and learning more about their operations.

BioFactura, Inc. manufactures critical biodefense drugs, such as its Smallpox Biodefense Therapeutic, for the US Government and other global markets. The Company also develops and manufactures low-cost, high-value biosimilars (generic biologics) to bend down the cost of healthcare and increase access the these critical products. BioFactura produces its products using StableFastTM, a patented manufacturing platform with significant advantages such as fingerprint matching of biosimilars to reference brand-name products.

The company, headed by President and CEO Darry Sampey, Ph.D., is located along Progress Drive in Frederick, but also has labs at the Frederick Innovative Technology Center, Inc. (FITCI), as well as an office in London. The team at BioFactura has big plans for the future, with intentions to expand their Frederick operations by over two-fold in the next year to support late-stage clinical development and commercial launch of products. BioFactura, Inc. currently has 40 employees. The company lists the “increasing pool of highly-talented biotech professionals,” “lower cost of commercial space,” and “strong support of local, state and federal governments” as a few of their main reasons for doing business in Frederick County.
